February of 1977 was indeed a special month. Carter G. Woodson has been called the "Father of Black History Month," which started as Negro History Week in 1926. Fifty-one years later, it was expanded to include the entire month of February. Woodson had taught himself math and reading, and in 1912, he earned a doctorate from Harvard University in history. In 1915, he founded the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History in 1915 and the Journal of Negro History, which was later changed to The Journal of African American History.
