February 26th, 2005 "Marcus Garvey coined the phrase "Black is Beautiful" during the Harlem Renaissance in the 1920s. Garvey founded the Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA) which had a membership of 1.5 million in 30 states. His nationalist movement, born out of black pride and independence, encouraged black Americans to repatriate Africa."
